There’s a dentist pun making the social media rounds these days, and it always makes us laugh:
“My dentist said I need a crown. I was like, I know, right?”
Who can relate? The vintage headpiece has morphed into one of the trendiest, chic and modern hair accessory for weddings today. Women are wearing them for other occasions, too, formal or otherwise. The crown design is even popping up in trendy wedding band design as well.
Perhaps it’s our obsession with British royalty or the influence of Downton Abby, Victoria, The Crown and the ladies of Game of Thrones (can you say badass and elegant in the same breath? Why yes, yes we can!). When it comes to spectacular headpieces, a girl cannot go wrong with a crown. Or a tiara.
So, what’s the difference?
They’re really the same stuff. While a crown is described as a traditional headpiece worn by a monarch or a deity (!) that contains jewels, a tiara is a jeweled, ornamental crown worn during formal occasions.
One caveat: the crown is a traditional symbol of power, legitimacy, victory, triumph, honor, glory, immortality, righteousness and resurrection. Pretty heavy stuff. Today’s crowns are ultra-glamorous tiaras inspired by the hand-crafted artistry of bygone eras -diamante bands, statement crowns, beaded halos, delicate painted floral pretty’s and luxe jeweled bravado that look as though they float on hair. And they’re designed for mere commoners to boot.
Coupled with the elegant hairstyles of chignons, French knots, loose romantic up-dos, soft messy curls or tousled waves, crowns add a hint of refinement and allure. Weave opulent beading in and under the hairline for a little more glamour without being over the top.
