“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination,” Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, says.

“It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”

And just like that, Ultra Violet is named the Pantone Color of the Year for 2018. Complex and contemplative, inventive and imaginative, Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead and the discoveries out beyond. The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own.

What Goes into Choosing a Trend-Setting Color

To select THE color each year, Pantone’s color experts at the Pantone Color Institute comb the world looking for new color influences. This can include the entertainment industry and films in production, traveling art collections and new artists, fashion, all areas of design, popular travel destinations, as well as new lifestyles, playstyles and socio-economic conditions (thank you, Red Hat Society!). Influences may also stem from new technologies, materials, textures and effects that impact color, relevant social media platforms and even up-coming sporting events that capture worldwide attention (can you say Purple People Eaters, people?). Pantone’s Color of the Year is influencing product development and purchasing decisions for 19 years and counting. Past colors selections include PANTONE 15-4020 Cerulean (2000), PANTONE 15-5217 Blue Turquoise (2005) and the duel award in 2016 for PANTONE 15-3919 Serenity and PANTONE 13-1520 Rose Quartz.

Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, says the Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean much more than what’s trending in the world of design. “As individuals around the world become more fascinated with color and realize its ability to convey deep messages and meanings, designers and brands should feel empowered to use color to inspire and influence.” she says.

“What Color Is Your Parachute?

Enigmatic purples are symbolic of counterculture, unconventionality and artistic brilliance. Musical icons Prince, David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix bring shades of Ultra Violet to the forefront of western pop culture as personal expressions of individuality. The nuanced depth of the color reveals a world of emotions for people who prefer experimentation and non-conformity, push boundaries through creative outlets and imagine their unique mark on the world.

Historically, Ultra Violet has a mystical or spiritual quality, often associated with mindfulness practices that offer a higher ground to those seeking refuge from today’s over-stimulated world. The use of purple-toned lighting in meditation spaces and other gathering places energizes like-minded people who gather there and inspires connection.

Ultra Violet in Fashion and Beauty

Ultra Violet is an enchanting purple that provides a theatrical touch to both men’s and women’s styles. The color is created by combining red and blue, making it very easy to pair with all colors of the spectrum. With golds and other metallics, Ultra Violet becomes luxurious and dazzling; with greens or grays, it evokes natural elegance. Spell-binding and steeped in spirituality, the use Ultra Violet creates expressive looks for everyone, adding complexity and mystery to every other color.

Purple, ultra violet, precious and semi-precious gemstones include amethyst (February’s birthstone), alexandrite and ametrine; jade, garnet and sapphire; tanzanite, chalcedony, tourmaline, fluorite and even diamond.
