So. You’ve scored tickets to the Fountain Square Music Festival, one of the largest in Indianapolis.

You’re so ready to be wowed by the event’s first-ever outdoor mainstage, called THE NUCLEUS, not to mention, this year’s unbelievable music acts. And … you’re going to work your music festival style to the max, accessorizing with all the latest – jewelry included. After all, it’s such a fun way to express your personal musical story, plus enhance your festival “uniform.” What are all the beautiful people wearing to music festivals these days? Take a look.

Fabulous Music Festival Fashion

  • Layers of Jewelry – large choker necklaces with long swaying pendants, stacks of rings on every finger, loads of “arm swag” like bracelets, leather ties and more.
  • Mix Metals – links and chains of different shapes and sizes, and all the finishes work effortlessly together.
  • Ear Cuffs and Piercings – Create the illusion of being pierced, even if the commitment to an actual piercing is never there.
  • Nail Art – Use your imagination to come up with your unique design or find inspiration on Instagram.

One Big Don’t

As long as you feel comfortable, confident and in tune (pun intended), you’ll be a happy music festival reveler. While those in the know caution about wearing your real jewelry, what if you do?

We all know that things happen. Whether you’re dancing, walking from the parking lot (at FSMF, it’s a 10-minute walk of the festival from the free, designated festival parking lots available to general admission ticketholders) or you accidentally leave your rings in the lavatory, you don’t want to worry your mind about losing your small fortunes. It almost certainly means a trip to the lost and found – however chaotic that might be. Even still …

This is when a good jewelry insurance policy is worth its weight in gold.

How Jewelry Insurance Works

The traditional insurance model for jewelry is a rider under most homeowner’s insurance policies. Typically, a person will purchase coverage for piece or pieces of jewelry. If it is lost or stolen, they can file a claim that eventually gets settled and the jewelry owner gets a check. Before you get that check, though – insurance companies choose to value your compensation in one of two ways – actual cash value (ACV) and replacement cost.

According to the Insurance Information Institute, ACV “pays damages equal to the replacement value of damaged property minus depreciation,” while replacement cost “pays the dollar amount needed to replace damaged personal property without deducting for depreciation but limited by the maximum dollar amount shown on the declarations page of the policy.” Because jewelry is unique -it doesn’t necessarily depreciate the same way a house or car does- you’ll typically receive a larger payout at the time of a claim if your insurance is based on replacement cost.

Most homeowner’s insurance with a repair or replacement jewelry policy requires you to work with a specified repair service or a designated jeweler to settle your claim. You may need to provide them with any appraisals, receipts or descriptions you have of the original item to help them provide a comparable piece. And, if your precious jewelry isn’t underinsured, you will be able to find a piece that’s indistinguishable from the original to replace it.
