Treat Yourself to the Next Level with Custom Jewelry Design.
Let’s hear it for the woman who knows the power of retail therapy. More than ever before, she is spending her hard-earned cash on herself, placing a premium on things that offer craftsmanship, usefulness and versatility. Not only is she purchasing Jimmy Choo’s, luxury watches, high-end clothing and pampering spa days to satisfy her self-care, she’s investing in stocks and bonds, buying businesses, collecting expensive wine … and indulging in fine jewelry.
Why does a woman treat herself to jewelry?
The short answer – probably because she knows exactly what she wants, better than anyone else. Here’s a longer wish list:
- To honor her own milestones – a work success or promotion, balancing work and family, being a great Mom, surviving treatment for breast cancer, finishing graduate school, submitting a first film to a festival, paying off debt, showing her independence and spirit, quitting a job to travel and write, finishing a dissertation and PhD program, celebrating sobriety, buying a first house, honoring a special birthday, showing the ex you’re doing just fine, thank you – events that are as wide-ranging and unique as the person they’re important to.
- To bond with someone special – like mothers and daughters or best friends buying matching jewelry, giving a gift of jewelry to commemorate something remarkable in the life of someone she loves or passing it on to the next generation.
- To remember a special place – like a vacation spot, home state or country, childhood haunt, birthplace, favorite hangout in the universe.
- To make a statement – of worth, wealth, fortitude, ingenuity. The very permanence of jewelry –made from metals like platinum, gold or silver and set with the hardest stones known to humanity – can say it all.
- To be fashionable – a piece that complements business attire, goes with everything, can be dressed up or down and still offers great style is worth buying.
“Your left hand says ‘we.’ Your right hand says ‘me.'”
When jewelers discuss business with other jewelers, they call women who buy jewelry for themselves self-purchasers – and the jewelry industry is talking quite a lot these days about their fastest-growing consumer, going one step further by designing jewelry specifically for them.
Worldwide, this consumer “phenomenon” dates back at least 35 years to the early 1980’s, when an advertising campaign called “Diamonds for Working Women” entices single, working women in Japan to buy diamond jewelry for themselves. The advertising that most influences American women, though, is the 14-year-old right-hand ring campaign. With brilliant writing such as, “The left hand says ‘we.’ The right hand says ‘me.’ Women of the world raise your right hand.” (We also like the line, “Your left hand celebrates the day you were married. Your right hand celebrates the day you were born.”), it is a huge success, increasing diamond sales by up to 15% at the time, winning prestigious awards for excellence in advertising – and more importantly, launching the idea of empowered women buying themselves diamonds to express their individuality. The advertising, officially known as the “Raise Your Right Hand” campaign, is created by the Diamond Information Center, a division of J. Walter Thompson that serves the Diamond Trading Company, part of the De Beers Group of Companies (the people who brought you A Diamond is Forever.). The momentum of fine jewelry’s right-hand ring mantra also spreads immediately to the mainstream. Walmart creates the Keepsake Independence ring (”a shining symbol of your feminine spirit”) and Costco enjoys an increase of more than 15% in nonbridal diamond sales.
Fast forward to 2017, and women are still “redefining femininity, away from the ‘sweetness’ of previous generations to combine strength with an essential grace. Diamonds are consequently becoming symbols of a wider range of emotions, including pride, joy and achievement,” according to De Beers’ 2017 report.
I’m sure ladies will raise their right hands to that!
The Sweet Spot for a Women Who Treats Herself to Jewelry
If she can find that unique piece to wear throughout her life as a daily reminder of whatever has meaning for her, there’s no doubt that the jewelry must be special.
They say that satisfaction has more sweetness than surprise, so why not design it herself?
Jewelry is intimate and deeply personal, and it makes complete sense that a woman would reward herself with a piece that reflects who she is, that she herself creates. At Indy Facets, we believe everyone should have the opportunity to help design and own custom jewelry. That’s why we offer a personal jeweler experience, where a woman can make a private appointment, at a time of her choosing, and get the full attention of an expert she deserves in a comfortable setting where she can even bring her kids (we have little gifts for young ones when they stop by). No waiting, no hassles, just the best of service, customized for her. Does that sound like a treat you’d want to give yourself?
So, ladies. What do you want to celebrate? Let’s make a beautiful, custom piece of jewelry that embodies it. Together.
